TRURO School students were jumping for joy after receiving their GCSE results. More than 500 top grades of 7 to 9 - more than twice the national average - were achieved across 22 subjects, including almost a third at 9 and 8.
Headteacher Andy Johnson said: “I am immensely proud of our GCSE pupils and all that they have achieved. Their academic successes are all the more impressive as they are obtained alongside so many other impressive achievements and so much personal growth.”
During their GCSE years, 105 pupils completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and 60 progressed to complete the Silver award. Half the year group represented the school in fixtures across 11 different sports, with individuals competing at national and World Championship level, the U16 girls’ football team winning the County Cup and the U16 boys reaching their final.
Pupils from this year group have also blown audiences away with a full-scale production of Chicago, concerts at the Hall for Cornwall, and senior choristers being been broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
“Our pupils come to Truro School to flourish as young people in an ambitious, caring and values-based environment that celebrates excellence in all its forms,” said Mr Johnson. “Today we are especially proud of their academic successes, but we value them and all they achieve in every area of school life.”
Among those celebrating was George, who achieved 11 grades at 9–7 and secured three national sailing titles this summer. He is looking forward to joining the sixth form to study A-Levels in maths, physics and DT. “Sport has been a valuable outlet, and I’ve loved the breadth of opportunities available at Truro,” he said.
Tora, who is considering maths, economics, biology, chemistry and an EPQ for A-Level, said: “I was a little nervous this morning, but also excited. I’m really looking forward to the independence that comes with sixth form and the chance to focus on the subjects I enjoy most.”
