STUDENTS at Truro School are celebrating an exceptional set of A Level results, with 50 per cent awarded at A*/A and over 80 per cent of all grades at A*-B. These results are stronger than last year’s, when the school was placed in the top 10 per cent nationally for value added at A Level.
Headteacher Andy Johnson, said: “We are extremely proud of our students. These headline figures are another year of even stronger outcomes for the young people we educate.
“Their ambition, courage, and dedication, matched by the support of families and friends, and the expertise and inspiration of our staff and sixth form team, is a source of joy to all associated with our school community.”
More than 99 per cent of students were on pathways of their own choice, including success with all Oxford applications, on specialist training courses, in degree apprenticeships, and careers in creative industries.
“As a school, we know an education built on values and supporting diverse individual ambitions paves the way for our leavers to thrive in and positively shape a complex and rapidly changing world,” said Mr Johnson.
Excellence extended beyond A Levels, with over 73 per cent of EPQ projects awarded A*. In the Leiths cookery qualification, 90 per cent achieved distinction or merit, and in PE CTEC 100 per cent of grades were distinctions and distinction stars.
Pax McDowell leaves with A*A*A and a distinction in Leiths, to study Resource and Exploration Geology at the Camborne School of Mines. His results far exceeded initial predictions, thanks to what he calls a “massive lock-in” of focused revision and support from teachers who ran clinics and additional sessions. He balanced academics with sport, drama and music, which gave him “a welcome break” and helped him stay motivated. His mother, Esmé Page, was incredibly grateful: “It’s just so exciting to see him achieve academically in a way that reflects how his mind works.”
Mia Handford scored A*A*A* in biology, chemistry and geology, and heads to Exeter to study biochemistry in Exeter. She offered advice to future sixth formers: “Start revising sooner than you think” and “Create your resources as you go.”
Eleanor Hewlett joined Truro School in Lower Sixth and achieved A*A A in psychology, business and geography. Inspired by her family’s business background, she plans to study business management at Exeter University, with a year abroad, and hopes to work internationally.
Martha Faulds achieved A*AA in Biology, Chemistry and Geology and is hoping to pursue a path in Dentistry. Her advice for those starting Sixth Form is simple but heartfelt: “Just keep going.”
Charlie Curran earned A*AA in geology, business and core maths, and will study geology at university. “We couldn’t have asked for more support from the staff,” said his mother. “Whatever happened today, we knew they’d already given him everything he needed to succeed.”
