West Cornwall Table Tennis League latest round-up
PREMIER Division champions Bridge A overcame a stern challenge from their St Austell counterparts to secure a 6-4 victory in their season opener on Wednesday night.
The home team have switched venue over the summer from Carnkie Village Hall to Crofthandy Village Hall, as well as seeing Cornwall player Tom Clack move up due to Paul Jenkin not being able to commit every week.
St Austell duo Dave Waddington and county champion Doru Florescu both beat Dave Plumb and Karim Ali, however Clack picked up a hat-trick.
Falmouth Docks A outlasted People’s Palace A on a night where play didn’t finish until 11.15pm.
Home skipper Aiden Rollason led the way with a hat-trick before combining with Joe Tuffery to take the doubles, and there was a brace for 16-year-old Logan Hodgson in their 7-3 success.
To round off a superb Tuesday for Falmouth, the promoted B team produced a fine 6-4 win at Mounts Bay.
Jon Sweet shocked Mark Cock in the night’s opener on his way to a treble, and with Blaise Hinshelwood adding a brace, they got the job done. Cock recovered to win two as well as the doubles with Rob Dyer.
Cape Cornwall A only avoided the drop late in the season, but teenagers Tom Trembath and Tom Wheatley both proved too strong for Bridge C in a 7-3 win. Promising youngster Sophia Warren made her Premier debut for the St Just-based club.
Promoted St Austell C secured a 5-5 draw at home to Bridge D on Monday night at Tregorrick Park. Andrew Gaved and Jaydon Lehane both won twice, as did Premier debutant Fynn Fleming for the visitors. The fixture between St Austell B and their Bridge B counterparts was postponed.
In Division One, both People’s Palace teams played twice, including a rearranged clash between the two on Thursday night which the B side edged 6-4 thanks to Nathaniel Heuston’s treble.
Earlier in the week, Chris Stevens (3) and Ian Gosling (2) helped the C team to a 5-5 draw at Penpol A, while the B side eased past St Austell D 8-2 which included a hat-trick from Paul Mullen.
Elsewhere in the division, Mounts Bay B edged out Creekside A 6-4 led by Peter Linton’s trio of victories, while across the hall, the C side lost by the same scoreline despite veteran Nigel Cock’s treble as Neala Cann, Peter Rowe and Paritosh Bedekar all won twice.
Godolphin A were 6-4 winners at Cape Cornwall B helped by Corin Trevena’s hat-trick, while the biggest victory margin went to Creekside B who saw off two-played Falmouth Docks D 9-1. Ben Charity and Jack Cortis were unbeaten.
All five games played in Division Two went the way of the home teams, which included a whitewash for the St Austell F trio of Timothy Hodder, Tobias Warran and Ewan Stephens over Redruth Cricket Club who only brought two players.
Creekside E thrashed Falmouth Docks E 9-1 with Antony Jackson and Mick Vigo unbeaten all night.
Both Godolphin B and C secured 7-3 home wins over Penpol B and St Agnes A respectively, while the closest match of the night saw Cape Cornwall C edged out Falmouth Docks F 6-4.
Brooke Mason (Godolphin C), William Trott (Godolphin B) and John Hooley (Cape Cornwall C) all started the season with hat-tricks, while People’s Palace D’s home date with St Austell E was postponed.
Two of St Austell’s sides in Division Three were victorious.
The trio of Luca Parry, Benjamin Morse and Thomas Morse earned St Austell G a whitewash victory at a battling Cape Cornwall E, while at the venue at the same time, St Austell F saw off Cape Cornwall F 7-3 led by hat-tricks from Ethan Gaved and Mark Fisher.
Alistair Dalley and Marcus Rogers produced trebles in St Agnes B’s 8-2 success over Penpol C, as did Jonathon Bradbury and Graham McEvoy as Godolphin D beat 6-4 away from home at St Austell H.
Friday night’s action saw St Austell J whitewash their I team counterparts 10-0 with trebles for Greg Watkins, Dan King and Ethan Gaved.
