NATIONAL LEAGUE TWO (WEST)
Chester 25 Camborne 45
CAMBORNE got their campaign off to a flying start with a bonus point victory at Chester.
The big home side quickly established an early eight-point lead, but a slick handling move promptly gave full-back Harry Larkins enough room to squeeze over to cut the deficit to 8-5.
Midway through the half ‘Town’ went in front when hooker Tommy Southworth dotted down from an impressive forward drive from a lineout. Fly-half Sam Walker made it 12-8.
Chester regained the lead with a converted score, but as the interval neared Camborne went through multiple phases before flanker Jordan Nicholls powered over. Walker again added the extras.
With ‘Town’ leading 19-15 at the break, Chester briefly regained the advantage with an unconverted try, but thereafter the Cherry and Whites dominated proceedings.
Fijian internationals Josh and Sam Matavesi combined superbly to break the home cover and allow prop Jon Drew to gallop over from fully 25 metres.
Walker banged over the extras and soon after he repeated the dose after a try of his own.
Leading 33-20, Camborne played territory astutely to restrict Chester, before a trademark try by Ducker made the game safe.
The Cherry and Whites made it seven tries for the day as skipper Sam Matavesi powered over from close range for brother Josh to convert.
The hosts earned a late consolation score, but Camborne’s attentions now turn to Saturday’s local derby clash with visiting Redruth (2pm).
