NATIONAL LEAGUE TWO (WEST)
Camborne 34 Barnstaple 22
Camborne returned to winning ways with a hard fought victory over third placed Barnstaple to maintain top spot in the table.
The Cherry & Whites exerted early pressure playing up the slope and soon went ahead when No 8 Shaun Buzza picked up from a close range scrum to dive over. Kyle Moyle added the regulation conversion for 7-0.
Barnstaple opened their account with a corner try after a home clearance kick was charged down but ‘Town’ responded swiftly with skipper Sam Matavesi bursting clear on a superb 30 metre run to the try line.
On 25 minutes Camborne extended the lead to 19-5 with Ben Priddey dotting down to round off an unstoppable catch and drive for full back Moyle to convert.
As the interval neared the visitors cut the deficit with a second unconverted score following a strong driving maul from their hardworking forward pack.
On the half time whistle the home side responded with the bonus point try after pressure in the turnstile corner saw lock Jack Andrew driven over for 24-10 at the break.
With the advantage of the slope in the second period, Camborne looked to set up camp in the West Bank corner and 10 minutes in hooker Priddey again profited from the catch and drive to complete his brace. Moyle’s well judged conversion gave Barnstaple a mountain to climb to get back into contention.
To their credit, the visitors responded as the game entered the final quarter running in an excellent converted try and thereafter ‘Town’ had to dig deep in defence for a period to keep their line intact.
Barnstaple piled on the pressure earning a deserved losing bonus point with a close range try before Moyle stroked over a 25 metre penalty goal on the final whistle to seal victory.
