TRURO City are closing in on qualification to the knockout stages of the National League Cup after easing past Birmingham City Under 21s 3-0 at the TCS last night.
The Tinners had already beaten Birmingham’s Fulham and Leicester City counterparts in their opening two matches, and despite naming a much-changed side from Saturday’s league victory at Braintree Town, still got the job done in front of a healthy midweek crowd of 1,172.
Goalkeeper Dan Lavercombe was given a rare start in place of Aidan Stone, while at the back Shaun Donnellan and Ryan Law also came in.
Further forward, Jack Nunn was given a chance in central midfield, as were attackers Harvey Greenslade and Zyan Blake, the latter on loan from Nottingham Forest.
Truro took the lead 13 minutes in via winger Tom Tweedy, and despite having to defend well against a Blues side who had five points to their name so far, scored twice in the second half via Ben Starkie and Greenslade to move on to a perfect nine points from nine.
Their fourth clash in the competition sees the Tinners welcome West Bromwich Albion Under 21s on Tuesday, November 3
Attention now turns to City’s huge FA Cup clash at Sutton United on Saturday (3pm) as they bid to reach the First Round Proper for just the second time having reached that stage in 2017 where they were beaten 3-1 at former Premier League side Charlton Athletic.
Sutton, who the Tinners twice faced last year in the National League before their relegation, sit mid-table and provide Truro with a chance of progression.
However, to do so they will have to overcome the Londoners on their own ground at Priory Lane where they are notoriously tough to beat.
TRURO CITY: Dan Lavercombe; Zac Bell, Max Kinsey, Shaun Donnellan, Ryan Law; Ben Starkie, Jack Nunn, Yassine En-Neyah, Tom Tweedy; Harvey Greenslade, Zyan Blake. Subs: Connor Riley-Lowe, Will Dean, Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain, Tom Dean, Luke Jephcott.
