WESTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

St Blazey 3 Bridgwater 1

ATTACKER Harry Probyn scored twice as Blazey returned to winning ways in the league with a fine performance against a lively Bridgwater side at Blaise Park.

The Green & Blacks’ six-game unbeaten run ended with a 5-2 defeat at Wellington a week earlier, but they responded in fine style.

They also showed their character after going behind to a Kyje Tooze strike in the 21st minute. They took only seven minutes to get level as Probyn produced a stunning finish to make it 1-1.

Callum McGhee put the home side ahead for the first time five minutes before half-time when a long throw-in from skipper Will Tinsley drifted across the penalty area and left McGhee to score from close-range.

Probyn’s second goal just after the hour gave Blazey some breathing space.

The only negative from an excellent performance was the sending off of recent signing Kieron Bishop 12 minutes from time.

Manager Mark Carter said: “We delivered a much-improved performance compared to last week, showing greater intensity and cohesion throughout the match.

“The opening 20 minutes saw Bridgwater take control of the game, as we afforded them too much respect and allowed them to dictate the tempo.

“However, falling behind appeared to spark a response. From that point onward, the team pressed higher, moved the game 30 yards further up the pitch, and displayed far greater aggression and purpose.

“From then on, we were superb. Man for man, they won the majority of individual duels and demonstrated a strong collective spirit.”

The Green & Blacks host Barnstaple Town on Saturday (3pm).
