WESTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
Newquay 5 Tavistock 0
NEWQUAY climbed into a promotion play-off place in spectacular style at Mount Wise on Wednesday night with five different players scoring goals against eighth-placed Tavistock.
The Peppermints moved above St Blazey into fifth place in the table with their fourth consecutive victory which has seen them keep four clean sheets while scoring 11 goals.
After a wobble in form at the start of October, Shaun Middleton’s side have settled into a good rhythm and will go into Saturday’s Cornish derby at home to Saltash United in confident mood.
They didn’t have it all their own way in the early stages of Wednesday’s match as they traded half chances with a lively Tavistock.
But as the half progressed Newquay gained momentum and broke the deadlock six minutes before the break when a long-range free-kick from Callum McOnie deceived Tavistock keeper Dan Holman.
Three minutes later it was 2-0 when a corner was met by Jack Bray-Evans, who headed past Holman to send the home side in at half-time in a strong position.
And they maintained their momentum in the early stages of the second half with man-of-the-match Matt Searle making it 3-0 seven minutes in.
There was no way back for Tavistock as Louis Price fired Newquay’s fourth goal on the hour, followed soon after by a Tim Nixon strike.
The rampant home side could have added several more goals in the last 25 minutes while the Lambs spurned a couple of chances to get a consolation.
