FA VASE FIRST ROUND PROPER
Newquay 1 Sturminster Newton United 4
AFTER their morale-boosting Cornish derby victory over Liskeard in midweek, Newquay were brought crashing back down to earth on Saturday when they were emphatically knocked out of the FA Vase by Wessex League Premier Division high-flyers Sturminster Newton United who scored twice in each half.
After a goalless opening half hour, Sturminster broke the deadlock through Ben Crowley and Newquay, playing their fifth successive game at home, suffered a big blow by conceding a second just before half-time through George Adair-Charlton.
The Peppermints, who brought on Matt Searle and Connor Paine at the start of the second half, huffed and puffed but couldn’t find a goal which would have got them back into the tie.
Instead it was the visitors who added to their lead with a Sean Hart goal in the 77th minute which put the game out of sight.
Jack Bray-Evans’ goal in the second minute of time added on was only a consolation, and even then the visitors went down to the other end and quickly restored their three-goal advantage through George Coleman.
Manager Shaun Middleton said: “Saturday was a very bad performance from us. We looked really leggy, really tired and really didn’t start the game at all.
“The second half wasn’t much better, but we’re going to have to dust ourselves down very quickly as we’ve got games coming thick and fast.
“We need to move on, forget about that and hopefully put it right on Wednesday night against Brixham which is going to be a very tough game. All credit to Sturminster, they came down and performed really well.”
