Newquay 0 Paulton Rovers 2
NEWQUAY never recovered from a nightmare start where they conceded two goals in the opening 10 minutes against a confident Paulton side at Mount Wise on Saturday.
The Peppermints did improve, especially in the second half, but they were denied by a resolute Paulton side who held out despite being reduced to 10 men for the last few minutes.
Peppermints boss Shaun Middleton said: “It was a terrible start again, two goals down in 10 minutes and then we have a mountain to climb.
“It’s really frustrating to start the way we are doing because after 10 minutes we played really well, but unfortunately we were nowhere near it in moments.
“And it shows with the results unfortunately, but we’ve got to keep fighting.
“Congratulations to Paulton who were a very strong outfit.”
The Somerset-based visitors were good from the outset and after the returning Brodie Cole had to save from Kitan Jaiyeoba on two minutes, Paulton took the lead three minutes later as Dan McBeam struck home from the edge of the box after good play by Kailan Gould.
The second goal came quickly and again Gould was instrumental. He again stole the ball and hit a low cross to Jaiyeoba, who made no mistake from six yards.
Newquay gradually improved and saw a free-kick from Cam Turner go wide, while in the second half, although more even, the hosts were restricted to half chances against a well-drilled backline.
The visitors lost Kyle Witt to a straight red card on 87 minutes, but they held out.
