Newquay hit six against bottom side Wellington

NEWQUAY recorded a comprehensive win over bottom-side Wellington at Mount Wise on Saturday.

The home side made the breakthrough in the 29th minute after Louis Price broke clear before shooting home to put his side in front.

Wellington looked set to go into the interval only one goal behind until the Peppermints struck again in stoppage time with Tim Nixon cutting inside before firing home.

On the hour mark, visiting goalkeeper Luke Vernon was beaten for a third time after Jack Bray-Evans converted from the spot.

The hosts added a fourth 10 minutes later when Bray-Evans’ cross was volleyed home by Price for his second goal of the game.

Newquay’s afternoon got even better shortly after when a Nixon cross was turned in by a Wellington defender to make it 5-0.

With three minutes remaining, Ben Shaw scored from eight yards out to bag his first goal for the Peppermints.

Newquay boss Shaun Middleton: “I’m obviously happy to get the three points and the clean sheet.

“These games are always difficult as they sit in deep, narrow and make it difficult for you to try and break the lines.

“My main team talk was about being ruthless because unfortunately we weren’t ruthless enough early on, but once we got the first goal we were really, really comfortable.

“We played well, we were patient, scored some good goals, and Ben Shaw getting his first for the club was a really special one for him.”

As the Voice went to press, Newquay were preparing for their Tuesday night clash at Liskeard Athletic in the first round of the Cornwall Senior Cup.

The Peppermints, who sit just outside the play-off places, are back in action this Saturday when they host top of the table Bridgwater United at 3pm.
