New signings to boost Ashes after another Jekyll and Hyde performance

SALTASH are still trying to rid themselves of Jekyll and Hyde performances after letting a first half lead slip because of a poor second half display at Kimberley Stadium on Saturday.

The Ashes’ dominance in the opening half was rewarded with a Sam Joce free kick goal in the 23rd minute and they really should have added to their lead before half-time.

But their levels dropped after the break and two goals in three minutes from Sidmouth substitute Sam Stapleton (73 and 75 minutes) turned the game on its head.

It was the Ashes’ third defeat in the last four league games after starting the season with a seven-match unbeaten run.

Manager Lee Britchford said: “It was a really disappointing result from us. We were excellent first half and poor in the second which seems to be a bit of a trend for us at the moment.

“We’re not stringing together that 90 minute performance we’ve been craving.

“Yesterday was another missed opportunity from our point of view, we should have put the game to bed in the first half.

“Ultimately we conceded two really poor goals from our perspective but no complaints from us based on our second half performance; it was another frustrating day at the office.

“We can’t keep having those days.”

Saltash announced before the game that they had secured the signing of former Torpoint defender Sam Hilson from troubled Tavistock.

The club also anticipates another arrival before Tuesday night’s Cornwall Senior Cup tie against old foes Liskeard Athletic at Lux Park on Tuesday night.

Britchford said: “I’m hoping the signings we’ve made this week will help us move forward for the rest of the season.”
