NEWQUAY return to league action tomorrow at Mount Wise against visiting Shepton Mallet (3pm) looking to put together a run of form.

The Peppermints’ six fixtures so far have seen them pick up a respectable eight points, but if they are to improve on last year’s sixth-placed finish, they will need to be far more consistent.

They face an acid test of their credentials as Mallet – who have already won at Liskeard and drawn at Saltash in Cornwall this season – head down from Somerset in eighth with 10 points from a possible 18.

Newquay are then at Saltash on Tuesday night for a Cornish derby as they face a brutal run of 14 outings between tomorrow and the end of October which includes 11 league games.

Middleton admits being consistent is key as they face a period which will decide whether they will be in the mix come the end.

He said: “The boys are really looking forward to tomorrow. We’ve had two weeks off after two disappointing results and we want to put that right in front of our home crowd, put a good performance on, and more importantly get that crucial win to set us up for a very busy period during September and October.

“We have a few missing for various reasons, but we need to get back to normal and get a bit of consistency going.”

Elsewhere in the division, the game of the day is in Somerset as third-placed Saltash United – unbeaten in seven outings, albeit four have been draws, go to league leaders Bridgwater United.

Bridgy are ambitious to get back to the Southern League, while the young Ashes, if possible, are seeking to sneak into the play-off picture having finished eighth last year.

Bridgwater have dropped just two points so far in a 2-2 draw with Newquay, but have won the other five to sit three points clear of St Blazey having played a game more.

With Blazey in FA Cup action, Saltash know an unlikely winning margin by three would see them end the day top of the table, but a point at Fairfax Park wouldn’t go amiss.

Promoted Liskeard’s up and down start took a giant bump in the road on Tuesday night, somehow giving away a three-goal lead to lose at Ivybridge Town.

Bailey Mabin’s hat-trick had the Blues cruising in South Devon, but after Matt Andrew was sent-off on the hour and the hosts pulled one back with 73 minutes gone, a late equaliser was proceeded by two injury-time strikes to leave the visitors in disbelief.

Such is the nature of the division, Liskeard have another game to look forward to as they make their first long trip of the season so far up to Brislington.

The Bristolians are much improved following last year’s struggles and although they have two wins from seven, both have come in the last three while they have played many of the promotion favourites already.

The two clubs have already met in South East Cornwall back in July as the Blues edged a seven-goal thriller.

Torpoint have steadied the ship after three successive defeats by seeing off Bovey Tracey and Sidmouth in the space of four days, and Dean Cardew’s men will go for a hat-trick of victories when they welcome promotion-chasing Clevedon Town to The Mill.

Town were beaten 3-2 at St Blazey last weekend and although they have four wins from six, they also lost to Bridgwater.
