WESTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION (WEDNESDAY)

St Blazey 0 Helston Athletic 2

HELSTON made it two wins out of two under new manager Dan Bua on Wednesday night by seeing off a disappointing St Blazey in front of a crowd of 280 at Blaise Park.

Liam Eddy, returning to one of his former clubs, broke the deadlock in the 37th minute by flicking in a corner at near post.

And substitute Rocco Hill completed the scoring after 68 minutes with a very similar finish for the visitors, who were later reduced to 10 men with Jake Warman shown a straight red card, which many inside the ground felt was a harsh decision.

After their opening day win over Wellington, a new-look Helston have made an impressive start to the league campaign.

Bua said: “It’s another step in the right direction for the group. I thought over the course of 90 minutes we fully deserved the three points although hampered somewhat by the red card.

“I thought was a collision of players, nothing else and nothing malicious in it.

“Nevertheless, I was pleased with so many aspects of the performance and extremely proud of the shift the lads put in against a strong and experienced Blazey side.

“It’s important we now remain humble and concentration turns to Saturday.”

Blazey boss Mark Carter said: “Last night was disappointing — not just the result, but more so the performance. Everything we did well on Saturday was missing against Helston.

“We started brightly and should have been in front within the opening minutes, but losing our focal point in Harry Probyn to injury (after 11 minutes) disrupted our rhythm. As the game progressed, we allowed Helston to grow into it and take control.

“At half-time, I still believed the boys could turn it around, but unfortunately, we didn’t come out with the same intent after the break. We became too direct and predictable, which played into Helston’s hands.

“Like in the Bridgwater game, the goals we conceded were soft and preventable — and that’s something we need to work hard to change.

“There’s no doubt we have quality in the group on an individual level. Now, it’s about learning how to come together and perform as a team.”
