WESTERN LEAGUE LES PHILLIPS CUP FIRST-ROUND
St Blazey 1 Newquay 5
ST BLAZEY will be glad to see the back of Newquay at Blaise Park after the visitors handed out another heavy defeat, this time in the Les Phillips Cup.
It’s only a month since the Peppermints won 4-0 in a Western League game and Blazey were hoping to exact revenge on Wednesday night.
But a Green and Blacks side missing several key players were eventually well beaten by a Newquay outfit who looked very well organised, disciplined at the back and deadly up front.
Some of the long passing from the back by Tom Moxham and Cam Turner were out of the top drawer.
Blazey actually started the game strongly and only a fine save from Ethan Elwell on his line prevented Sam Clifton from opening the scoring in the seventh minute.
A minute later a volley from the edge of the penalty area from debutant Levi Landricombe was cleared off the line.
But with their first attack Newquay swept into a 14th minute lead as Jamie Lowry’s pinpoint corner from the left was headed in by centre-half Harry Downing inside the six-yard box.
St Blazey took only eight minutes to equalise as excellent work out wide on the left by Tom Hensman ended with a low ball into the area which in-form attacker Harry Probyn superbly half-volleyed into the net.
But Newquay restored their lead three minutes later in extraordinary fashion. They won a free-kick on the halfway line, close to the dugouts, and Cam Turner’s fantastic delivery drifted over everybody before debutant Allam Ahmed nipped in at the back post to head in.
The turning point came in the 32nd minute when Newquay were awarded a dubious penalty for an alleged handball offence a linesman gave after the referee, only yards away from the incident, waved away Peppermints protests.
Jack Bray-Evans duly rolled the spot-kick in to give the visitors a two-goal cushion and they never looked back.
St Blazey dominated possession in the second half and came close in the 65th minute when Callum McGhee curled a right foot shot inches over the bar.
But four minutes later, Louis Price scored Newquay’s fourth goal after finishing off a cross from the right by Bray-Evans.
And they completed the scoring a minute from time. Price broke clear and played in Rhys Simmonds, who beat a couple of defenders before turning and finding Price, who fired his second shot into the net after his initial effort was kept out by Mac Dewsnap.
Newquay boss Shaun Middleton said: “I thought the boys played really well last night – started slowly but weathered the storm.
“Once we started playing we played some great stuff. It was pleasing as we had three 17-year-olds in the side and they all played well.
“And Al Ahmed getting a goal on his debut was great; he looked razor sharp and very impressive.”
He added: “It was also pleasing to bounce back from such a poor performance at Hallen and if sets us nicely for Bridgwater away on Saturday.
“Hopefully the lads are at it as it will be a very tough game.”
Reg Hambly, temporarily in charge of St Blazey, said: “We were missing a few key players but I thought the lads started really well and forced Newquay on to the back foot until a couple of set pieces and a contentious penalty changed the game.
“That gave Newquay the confidence to knock the ball around and they finished the half well on top.
“The second half started in similar fashion, we had plenty of possession and the game was mainly played in Newquay’s half. But they were clinical on the break and the fourth goal on 70 minutes ended all chance of a comeback.
“Fair dues to Newquay, they have some quality players who can change a game and thoroughly deserve their spot in the next round.
“We have another big game on Saturday, at home to Oldland, so need to dust ourselves down and hope to continue our unbeaten run in the league.
“Hopefully we can get one or two lads back for that one.”
