PENZANCE skipper Brad Wadlan hailed the ‘Sharland show’ as Charlie Sharland’s brutal 124 not out saw the champions ease to a seven-wicket victory over strugglers Callington at St Clare on Saturday.

Chasing the Greens’ 190, Sharland - who struck 14 fours and nine sixes in his 65-ball knock - came to the wicket in the second over, but such was the rate he scored at, the winning runs came in less than 20 overs as the West Cornwall outfit moved 19 points clear at the top of the ECB Cornwall Premier League ahead of nearest challengers Wadebridge.

Reflecting on the afternoon, which saw the home side’s bowlers take regular wickets throughout, led by Tom Dinnis’ 3-33 from 10 overs, plus two each from Jonny Ludlam (2-34) and Wadlan (2-21), Wadlan told the Voice: “It was a really pleasing all-round performance Saturday against a good batting side and to restrict Callington to under 200 was a fantastic effort from the bowling group.

“I thought Tom Dinnis was exceptional once again leading the attack.”

Wadlan felt his bowlers had set the game up perfectly and praised the clinical nature of the chase.

He continued: “With the bat we felt in the morning a par score on a fresh pitch would be around 270, and the way Purchase set the tone from the first over hitting two boundaries and a six just set the tone.

“Once he got out the rest of it was the Sharland show. He struck some of the biggest sixes I have ever seen but played orthodox crocket shots and really embraced his new role batting at number three.

“He has been threatening to do play that sort of innings for a few weeks and has worked very hard in the weeks building up to have the best opportunities to do that.

“We are really pleased for him and it comes just in time before our big semi-final next weekend (against Wanstead and Snaresbrook in the ECB National Club Championship).”

Penzance head to North Cornwall this Saturday as they take on mid-table Werrington (1pm).
