ECB Cornwall Premier League round-up – Saturday, June 21

REDRUTH and St Austell both saw their title hopes take a blow on Saturday as both were thrashed by sides in the bottom four.

The Reds welcomed Grampound Road but ran into a remarkable performance from Antony Angove.

The former county all-rounder took 6-9 from his 10 overs, as the home side slipped from 60-0 in the 12th over to just 119 all-out.

Openers Toby Whiteford (41) and Toby Stoddard (14) got off to a flier, before Angove, who took out the top six, and Alex Lean (0-23 off 10) were introduced.

Ellis Whiteford resisted with an unbeaten 29 as Nathan Keevil (2-55 off 7) and Ravi Karunarathna (2-11 off 3.5) sorted out the rest.

The Road found themselves 30-2 before Chris Roberts (36) and skipper Tom Orpe added 63.

Orpe was unbeaten on 42 alongside Karunaratha (11no) as the Roadies moved up to seventh, 15 points above bottom side Truro.

St Austell dropped to fourth after being hammered by seven wickets at Werrington.

The Saints were dismissed for just 67 in exactly 20 overs with Sam Hockin’s 7-32 the best figures in the league so far this summer.

Dan Barnard, who dismissed the top three of Mike Bone, Thevindu Dickwella and Dan Jarman, took 3-32.

Werrington then eased to victory in just 15.4 overs with John Moon (22), Adam Hodgson (24) and Thulina Dilshan (16no) amongst the runs.

Wadebridge are second, 15 points off the top after a three-wicket success at Callington who dropped to sixth following Helston’s victory by the same margin at St Just.

Callington amassed 204-8 after choosing to bat.

The recalled James Brenton made a promising 18 as opener, before Max Tryfonos (69 off 125) and Liam Lindsay (23 off 56) added 73 to take the score to 106-2.

Xavie Clarke (39 off 45) ticked along, but Aussie Lachlan Crump restricted the Greens with 4-23 from his six overs.

A score of 200-plus is never easy at Moores Park, but the Swans got there with 20 balls to spare despite Mohammed Danyaal’s brilliant 5-41.

Wadebridge were in a spot of bother at 102-4 with Tom McLachlan (17), Matt Rowe (27) and James Turpin (25) all out having made starts. Man-of-the-match Crump (74 off 106) then found an ally in Callum Wilson (28 off 56) as they put on 78.

Danyaal returned for a third spell and took out another three including Crump (74 off 106) with a remarkable one-handed caught and bowled, before Fred Wilkinson (6no) and Matt Lawrence (7no) held their nerve.

Helston bounced back from their Grampound Road defeat at St Just.

The hosts were 153-4, helped by runs from Lewis Stephens (29) and Neil Curnow (33), and well set with Sri Lankan pro Chamikara Edirisinghe (43 off 64) still there, but once he fell to Brad Bury the wheels came off as they were dismissed for 176.

Logan Curnow made a quickfire 17, but Aussie spinner Harry Saunders took 5-39 from 10 overs, although it was the left-arm spin of Brad Bury (3-16 off 7) that was just as important.

Earlier, Lewis Stephens made a quickfire 29.

Helston got the over line with an over to spare in a solid team performance as Billy Taylor (55), Steve Jenkin (46) and Karl Leathley (41) were amongst the runs.
