BRADLEY’S VINTER CUP QUARTER-FINAL
Penzance 157-8 (20), Redruth 105 (18.1).
HOLDERS Penzance progressed to yet another Vinter Cup semi-final after eventually easing past in-form Redruth at St Clare on Wednesday night.
The hosts were in big trouble at 7-3 as after Aussie Justin Beaton had Christian Purchase caught behind for four in the first over, before Reds skipper Piran Kent’s off-spin accounted for Charlie Sharland and Jack Paull for a single apiece.
Home skipper Brad Wadlan made a run-a-ball 35 which was added to by Grant Stone’s 42 as they reached 93-5.
Redruth continued to chip away through the middle, but the home side produced a strong finish. Second teamer Matt Stevens made 30 not out from 25 before Jonny Ludlam and Menhran Sanwal provided the gloss.
Ludlam made 11 off seven, but Sanwal’s 25 from seven which included a four and three sixes got them up to 158-7.
Ellis Whiteford took 2-31 from his four overs, while Beaton went for just 20 off his four.
Needing nearly eight an over was never going to be easy and the Reds got off to a disastrous start as the hard-hitting Toby Whiteford was brilliantly caught on the boundary in the first over by Ludlam off Giles Lawrence (2-26).
Sri Lankan pro Dulash Udayanga was caught on the mid-wicket boundary for nine and when Lloyd Brock fell to Tom Dinnis for 14, it was 28-3 after just four overs.
The Stoddard brothers – Toby (19) and Elliot (8) took the score to 59-3 after 10 overs, but 100 off the last 60 balls was going to be tough.
Charlie Hearn dismissed both with just a single added and from there they never threatened as they were dismissed for 105, Hearn taking 4-31 with his left-arm spin.
Of the rest, Beaton (18) and Kent (10) were the only batsmen to reach double figures.
