ECB Cornwall Premier League round-up – Saturday, August 9
ST JUST and Callington picked up vital victories in their quest to avoid the drop as Truro remain bottom, 13 points adrift.
St Just welcomed Truro made a competitive 206-9 from their 50 overs.
Scott Harvey made 15 opening the batting on his return from injury, but bar skipper Charlie Kent’s 69 and 39 from Indian Akhilesh Sahani, nobody could really kick on.
Home skipper Gareth May took 3-47 as fellow spinners Chamikara Edirisinghe (2-26) and Lewis Stephens (1-35) gave little away.
St Just openers Neil Curnow (40) and May (29) added 78 before Rob Harrison’s (4-22) four-wicket burst saw the hosts slip to 107-4.
A patient 59-run stand between Phil Nicholas and Edirisinghe set the platform, and although Sahani (3-26) returned and took out three in quick succession to leave the hosts needing 21, Nicholas’ brilliant 47 not out got them over the line. That said, they were helped by Truro being penalised six runs for taking too long to bowl their overs and Ben Stevens’ 12 not out.
Callington won a low-scoring thriller at home to Grampound Road to move 16 points clear of Truro.
Grampound lost Alex Lean and Harry Gregory early on before skipper Tom Orpe (39 off 26) and Antony Angove (31 off 27) took the score to 76-2 after just nine overs.
Both fell to Mohammed Danyaal (4-48) and from there on it was a procession as 17-year-old Spencer Whatley took 3-18 including the big wicket of Ravi Karunarathna for just six.
Ben Ellis returned at the end to take two in two balls as the Roadies were dismissed for just 104 in 18.1 overs.
On an incredibly spicy pitch, Cally fell to 30-7 as Nathan Keevil (2-31) and Angove (4-23) ran riot.
Danyaal and Ellis added 24 but it was Ellis’ unbeaten 44 from 76 balls that got the job done in partnership with Joe White (10no).
Elsewhere, leaders Penzance won by six wickets at an understrength Werrington.
Mehran Sanwal (3-31) and Charlie Hearn (3-35) shared six wickets as the hosts, who saw George Rickard make an impressive 45, were dismissed for just 141.
Sam Hockin (3-34) single-handedly reduced the visitors to 27-3, but Jack Paull’s 80 not out saw them over the line.
Wadebridge cemented second with an 88-run success at Redruth.
The Swans ground out a competitive 197-9, nearly half the total coming from James Turpin (51) and Lachlan Crump (37). Left-arm spinner Craig Johnson took 4-43.
Redruth were dismissed for just 109 despite Dulash Udayanga’s 35, while off-spinners Matt Robins (3-10 off 10) and Charlie Ellis (4-4 off 6.2) turned the tide.
St Austell are within eight points of third-placed Helston after seeing off the Blues in a last over thriller at Wheal Eliza.
Helston recovered from 54-4 to post 220-9 thanks to forties from Jayden Mitchell (45) and Mark Jenkin (44)and a superb 63 not out from Sunny Osmont, as Liam Watson (3-35) and Thevindu Dickwella (3-11) shared six wickets.
Dickwella then struck 100 from 88 balls as he and fellow opener Dan Jarman (35) added 101.
The Blues fought back throughout, led by Osmont’s 3-37, but 34 from skipper Alex Bone plus a pair of tens from David Munn and Adam Snowdon got the job done after four were required off the last over.
