CORNWALL CRICKET LEAGUE BRITANNIA INN HAWKEY CUP (FIRST-ROUND)

ST AUSTELL Seconds and Lanhydrock booked their places in the last eight of the Hawkey Cup following contrasting victories on Wednesday night.

St Austell made the short trip to County Division One rivals Roche and their total of 149-8 was built around a superb 75 from opener James Carter.

His 45-ball knock included eight fours and three sixes as he received useful support from James Pook (21 off 18) and Jack Mallet (28 off 26).

Carter departed in the 15th over and if it wasn’t for a late Roche fightback the total could have been far higher.Spinners Oscar Green (1-24) and Shaun Trudgeon (1-15) were economical while James Hunkin took 3-23 from his three overs.

Roche’s reply got off to a steady yet unspectacular start through openers Ryan Clark (26) and Adam Trudgeon (23), and although debutant wicket-keeper Liam Brignull made an unbeaten 49 from 39 balls, St Austell’s bowlers kept things tight. Rob Mitchell took 2-21 from three overs.

Down at St Blazey, Lanhydrock recovered from a dreadful start to post 132 all-out, helped by a rapid 40 from just 15 balls from number nine Rowan Evans.

The Australian all-rounder smashed five fours and three sixes in his knock after coming in at 75-7.

Earlier, Amir Khan made 28 from just 16 balls, but Blazey’s bowlers were on fire, including a superb spell from Nithin Gowda (2-7 off 4). Andrew Thomas (3-24) and Ruhann Brenner (2-38) shared five wickets.

The Blazey reply never got started as they slipped to just 73 all-out in 19.2 overs as Angus Harley (17no) was the only player to reach double figures.

All of Lanhydrock’s bowlers enjoyed themselves with Ben Attfield (2-13), Rowan Evans (2-16) and Brian Barnicoat (3-23) sharing seven wickets.

The quarter-finals are scheduled for either May 20 or 21.
