ECB Cornwall Premier League round-up – Saturday, July 12
PENZANCE now have a 14-point lead at the top of their table following their 114-run victory at Grampound Road and Helston’s six-wicket success over previous leaders Wadebridge.
Helston are on a fine run of form and now up to second, one ahead of Saturday’s opponents.
On the hottest day of the season so far, Wadebridge won the toss and chose to bat, but found the going tough against the Blues’ new ball pairing of Ryan Tonkin (2-19 off 10) and Jayden Mitchell.
Mitchell (2-43 off 7) struck twice as the Swans slipped to 19-3 and latterly 93-8 in the 35th over with only Matt Rowe and Fred Wilkinson reaching double figures.
But James Turpin is in the form of his life and the former captain responded with a brilliant knock of 82 as he and Matt Lawrence (28) helped them reach 170 all out. Ollie Black took 3-43.
Callum Wilson (2-26) helped reduce the Blues to 18-3, but after Mitchell and Karl Leathley (27) put on 53, Mitchell (85no off 106) found a perfect foil in Mark Jenkin (32no off 78) to get the job done.
Penzance put on a fine batting display in their total of 259 all out.
The West Cornwall outfit were 62-3 with Christian Purchase (28) and Charlie Sharland (24) both having made starts, but after Brad Wadlan (58) and Nic Halstead-Cleak (34) added 85, the momentum was taken on by Tommy Sturgess (31) and Josh Croom (50) as the hosts toiled in the heat. Nathan Keevil (3-54), Ravi Karunarathna (3-56) and Alex Lean (3-48) got some reward.
Although the dangerous Dave Hoskings went for nought to Mehran Sanwal (2-26), ‘The Road’ were going okay at 37-1 with Antony Angove (24) and Lean (18) both set.
Wickets then tumbled at regular intervals to be dismissed for just 145 as of the rest, only Karunarathna (28), Tom Orpe (17) and Harry Matthews (31no) reached double figures as Wadlan (3-36) and Sharland (3-21) shared six wickets.
Toby Stoddard made a patient 90 as Redruth saw off Werrington by 32 runs at the Timbabuild Park.
The teenager batted nearly to the end as the hosts made 217-9 having been 135-6.
A 68-run stand with Ellis Whiteford (28no) proved decisive as Adam Hodgson (3-34) and Mark Taskis (2-19) shared five wickets.
Werrington were well on course at 142-3 with Thulina Dilshan (50) and Ben Jenkin (19) set, but once Dilshan was bowled by skipper Piran Kent (2-44), the wheels fell off as Sri Lankan Dulash Udayanga took 5-51 with his off-spin.
Mid-table St Austell returned to winning ways with a comfortable success over visiting Truro who remain two points above bottom side Grampound Road.
The Saints chose to bat and made 218-8 from their 50 overs with notable contributions from opener Dan Jarman (46), Alex Bone (68) and Connor Cooke (51).
Truro’s bowlers stuck to their task well with Akhilesh Sahani (3-43) and Neil Ivamy (4-40) sharing seven wickets.
The city outfit found themselves 44-4 with both Harry Phillips (20) and Sahani (12) out, and although Murray Wyatt (22) and Adam Price (41) got in, they soon slipped to 118-7 as the home spin trio of Andrew Libby (1-39), Gary Bone (2-35) and Thevindu Dickwella (2-17) gave little away.
Truro then rallied to reach 171-9 with Jack Ivamy 18 not out.
