ECB Cornwall Premier League round-up – Saturday, June 14
CHAMPIONS Penzance are the new leaders after they overcame a late wobble to see off previous table-toppers Redruth.
The poor weather in the build-up meant a 38-over game, but what followed was a low-scoring classic.
Pakistani pro Mehran Sanwal struck twice to reduce Redruth to 8-2, but after Toby Stoddard fell for 26, the hosts reached 85-3 with seven overs remaining.
Sanwal returned to dismiss Jack Hale for 19 and from there wickets fell at regular intervals including Sri Lankan pro Dulash Udayanga for 42 as they closed on 125-7.
The DLS target of 127 looked a long way off when Aussie Justin Beaton took out Christian Purchase and Nicholas Halstead-Cleak in successive balls (1-2).
Jack Paull made 21 and with Grant Stone (25 off 67) and Charlie Sharland (37 off 39) going well, the visitors reached 86-3.
Ellis Whiteford took out both men and when skipper Brad Wadlan and Sanwal were dismissed in the same Udayanga over, it was 99-7.
Matt Stevens struck 12 off Whiteford’s first three balls of the 28th over before being dismissed with 16 still required, but Jonny Ludlam and Tom Dinnis held their nerve.
St Austell are third, just five points off top spot as Liam Watson and Andrew Libby combined to devastating effect against Wadebridge.
The match was reduced to 40 overs, and after the Saints chose to bat, they found themselves in a fine position to kick on at 99-2 in the 28th over.
Connor Cooke went for 34 which was followed by the in-form Alex Bone for seven, but Dan Jarman kept going as they ended on 173-7.
Jarman made 61 from 85 balls as none of the Swans attack took more than a wicket.
The Swans reached 35-1 in the 11th over with Matt Robins (22) and Alex Forward (12) at the crease.
But once Forward fell to Watson, they remarkably collapsed to 42-7.
Libby’s left-arm spin accounted for Robins and Aussie Lachlan Crump, before Watson (3-19 off 8) trapped the ever-dangerous James Turpin lbw and Adam Snowdon nipped out Callum Wilson and Kelvin Snell.
Matt Rowe (36) and wicket-keeper Fred Wilkinson (31) added 56 to raise hopes of a unlikely comeback, but Libby (5-15 off 6.1) returned to take out both men and Matt Lawrence as the end came at 115.
Grampound Road moved off the foot of the table after a superb four-run victory at Helston, a result which leaves Werrington and Truro joint last.
The Road found themselves in spot of bother at 105-5 before Harry Gregory and Sri Lankan pro Ravi Karunarathna added 77.
The Blues fought back to make it 201-7, but Karunarathna (88no off 58) was joined by Nathan Keevil (21) to put on a rapid stand of 56 as they totalled 257-7.
Helston were left disappointed with the chase as despite all of their top eight reaching double figures, they could not get over the line.
Steve Jenkin top-scored with 54 from just 56 deliveries, but the middle-order struggled to score freely despite Karl Leathley (31), Jayden Mitchell (27), Mark Jenkin (26) and Sunny Osmont (22) all getting in.
Antony Angove (2-47) and Alex Lean (2-40) shared four wickets as the Blues ended on 253-8.
The clash between Callington and Truro was cancelled water got under the covers following the morning rain.
