Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League County Division One round-up – Saturday, May 24

NEWQUAY fought back to see off promoted Perranporth by 21 runs in the local derby at the Sports Centre on Saturday.

Having chosen to bat, the home side slipped to 25-3 with James Hall (2-32) starring.

Adam Jenkin (33) and Aussie Toby Chillingworth got the innings back on track with a partnership of 93 before another collapse saw them slip to 151-9 as Travis Woolston (2-18), Tyler Murrell (3-38) and Muzz Murrell (2-28) got to work.

Gangul Ravina (23) and last man Jack Crichton (2no) added a vital 23 to get the hosts up to 174.

The Perranporth reply saw Jon Hancock dismiss Travis Woolston and Cameron Bishop with the first two deliveries before skipper Harry Watkins (40 off 23) and Bryn Evans (31 off 22) attacked, reaching 83 in just seven overs.

Evans was trapped lbw by Crichton’s first delivery before the persevering Hancock (3-46 off 5) got Watkins in the eighth.

Chillingworth was introduced and he sent down 10 superb overs for figures of 3-13 as although Perranporth continued to score around him, wickets fell as they ended 21 short having batted just 30.4 overs.

Hayle remain top after a six-wicket victory at bottom side Roche.

The home side were in serious bother at 50-5 after 21 overs, nearly half of which came from Jacob Rowe (24).

But an impressive response saw the Clay Country outfit post 187-9 as Liam Brignull (47), Jason Williams (38) and Stewart May (30) got stuck in.

Four of Hayle’s attack took a brace, including Stephen Richards (2-18) and skipper Tom Sharp (2-27).

The visitors attacked from the off but found themselves 65-3 in the 13th over.

But Sharp – Cornwall captain between 2002 and 2013 – showed his class with an unbeaten 91 which included 10 fours and two sixes, and was helped by a stand of 87 with Stephen Richards (38).

Camborne are second, nine points back after hammering promoted St Austell Seconds by 210 runs at Wheal Eliza.

The visitors’ hefty total of 287-7 was built around a third-wicket stand of 134 between Aussie Josh Fontana and Sri Lankan Danuka Dilshan.

While Dilshan added 73 before departing, Fontana continued on before eventually falling for 104.

Late cameos including twenties from Jordan Harvey (28) and Jacob MacDonald (24no off 10) pushed them towards 300. Curtis Dalby took 2-50 from his 10 overs.

Dilshan’s fine afternoon continued with the new ball with 5-31 from seven overs, before MacDonald (3-10 off 6.5) wrangled out the lower order as the end came at 77.

Champions Beacon were missing skipper Ben James, Sam James and Jordan Thomas, and looked in trouble at St Erme having been dismissed for just 142.

Kyle Van Rooyen took 4-24 as Beacon slipped to 33-5, before Tom James’ 30 led the fightback with numbers nine to 11 all making double figures.

That proved more than enough as although five batsmen got into the teens, nobody made more than Daniel Foulds’ 19.

Gareth Mankee took 4-29 as he and Joe Tunnicliffe (3-16) ran riot.

Falmouth won by just four runs on the DLS Method at Paul.

The visitors recovered from 85-6 to post 163 all-out with skipper Aidan Carter making a crucial 45 not out after opener Harry Philpott (34) got in.

Michael Fitchett took 2-17 from nine overs, before Harry Friggens (2-43) and Ben Brooks (3-34) shared five.

Paul reached 139-8 off 37 overs when the rain set in having been 83-5.

Andrew Snell (30) and Damon Nicholls (32) got in before falling, while Haydn Ayres (2-24), Jake Gibson (3-29) and Adrian Noott (2-21) starred with the ball.
