ECB CORNWALL PREMIER LEAGUE (SATURDAY)

St Just 133-9 (39), Truro 117 (30.2/34).

ST JUST produced a superb comeback to move 16 points clear of bottom side Grampound Road with a six-run success at Truro.

The West Cornwall club’s innings saw plenty of batsmen get in without kicking on in a game originally reduced to 40 overs after a delayed start.

After opener Rhys Brownfield was trapped lbw by Rob Harrison for a single, Ellis May (14), Neil Curnow (24) and Philip Nicholas (19) set the platform to kick on before falling as they slid from 71-2 to 76-4.

Sri Lankan pro Chamikara Edirisinghe and skipper Gareth May started a rebuild, but just as Edirisinghe (20) looked set, he was well caught and bowled by off-spinner Jack Ivamy (2-19 off 5).

May was caught at long-on off Scott Kellow (2-30 off 8) for 16 which meant Jamie Semmens (14no) and Ben Stevens (11) had to scrap their way up to 133-9, the latter being run-out off the final ball.

Truro soon lost Luke Johnson to Ellis May before a rain break, and eventually the target was set at 124 from 34 overs.

Opener Wilfred Bartlett made 24 and three of the top five reached double figures, before number eight Jack Williams added 28.

But St Just battled away and Edirisinghe’s brilliant spell of 4-22, which included dismissing Indian Akhilesh Sahani for nought, turned the game.

Young spin twins Lewis Stephens (2-15 off 5.2) and Joe Clifton-Griffith (2-10 off 3) then held their nerve.

ECB CORNWALL PREMIER LEAGUE (SATURDAY)

Redruth 112-9 (20), Wadebridge 111 (20).

REDRUTH produced a remarkable late fightback to see off Wadebridge and move six points clear at the top.

The Swans needed just 12 off 23 balls with five wickets in-hand in pursuit of 113 in a match which was reduced to 20 overs per side due to the poor weather.

But when Matt Robins was caught off visiting skipper Piran Kent and just three came off the next which saw Tom McLachlan bowled by Justin Beaton, the equation was nine off 12.

Five came off the 19th bowled by Kent, meaning Lloyd Brock had just four to defend.

After a dot ball, home skipper Kelvin Snell was caught by Elliot Stoddard before Matt Lawrence was bowled first ball.

Last man Elliot Dunnett managed a single off the fifth leaving Fred Wilkinson needing two for a tie.

However, he was comfortably run out coming back for the second by Beaton and wicket-keeper Peter Howells.

Earlier, once play did get underway at 4.30pm, Kent chose to bat.

Despite Brock’s rapid 28, the Reds found themselves in bother at 48-4 after eight overs thanks to Callum Wilson’s 3-14.

But a 40-run stand between Dulash Udayanga (35 off 35) and Howells (15 off 22) gave them a platform to eventually scramble up to 112-9 despite Matt Lawrence (2-30 off 4) and James Turpin (2-16 off 4) sharing four wickets.

Wadebridge were seemingly cruising to victory as Turpin (36 off 28) and Rowe (37 off 36) took the Swans to 79-2 after 11 overs.

But both fell to left-arm spinner Dan Viner (2-18 off 4) and from there on, the pressure became too much.

Cornwall off-spinner Ellis Whiteford (2-10 off 4) and Beaton (1-12 off 4) gave away nothing before Kent (1-24 off 4) and Brock (2-30 off 3) held their nerve.
