When Amber first walked through the doors of her local Slimming World group in Pensilva six and a half months ago, she hoped she could make some positive changes. What she didn't realise was just how much those changes would impact her confidence, her health and her family life.
Looking back, Amber says she's most proud of herself for simply showing up and staying determined. Sticking with Slimming World, changing her lifestyle and proving to herself that she could do it has brought her closer to where she wants to be. While the weight loss has been fantastic, it's the confidence she's gained along the way that means the most.
"I feel so much more confident when I'm out with friends and family," says Amber. "I'm not hiding away in baggy clothes anymore and I actually feel good about myself. That's been my biggest achievement."
Keeping focused hasn't always been easy, but Amber has a very special reason to stay motivated. Her daughter is her biggest cheerleader, celebrating every milestone with a smile and a proud "well done, Mummy!" Those precious moments remind Amber exactly why she started her journey. Amber also reflects on old photographs and remembers how unhappy she once felt in her own skin.
"I look at those pictures and remember thinking, 'I don't want to feel like this anymore.' Now, when I put on old clothes and they hang off me, I feel so proud. It's lovely to finally feel comfortable in my own body."
Like many members, Amber has experienced challenges along the way and understands how easy it can be to let one difficult day derail an entire week. That's why her advice to anyone struggling is simple: keep going.
"We all have hurdles to overcome, but don't let one bad day define your week. I used to do that all the time. Draw a line under it, start fresh the next day and keep moving forward. Most importantly, don't beat yourself up if things don't go to plan."
A huge part of Amber's success has been the support she receives at group each week. She loves the warm, welcoming atmosphere and finds inspiration in listening to other members' journeys.
"Everyone is so friendly and supportive. Whether you're having a good week or a difficult one, there's always advice, encouragement and understanding. Coming to group really helps keep me on track."
Alongside her weight loss, Amber has noticed some incredible health benefits too. Her knees and back hurt much less than they used to, and she's now able to run around and play with her daughter without constantly feeling out of breath or exhausted.
"I can be the mum I want to be. We can go out and have fun together, and I'm not struggling after a couple of minutes."
There have also been plenty of non-scale victories along the way. One of Amber's proudest moments was buying a pair of size 12 jeans for the first time since she was much younger. The everyday wins are just as rewarding. Walking longer distances feels easier, everyday tasks are more comfortable and, as Amber laughs, she can finally paint her toenails without her tummy getting in the way.
Food Optimising has also transformed Amber’s relationship with food. She enjoys cooking meals from scratch, filling up on Free Food and knowing she doesn't have to feel deprived. "I love that I can eat normal family meals, enjoy plenty of filling foods and still have a treat if I want one without feeling guilty." And if you are lucky enough to be invited round for dinner? Amber's answer comes without hesitation. "It would have to be chilli! It's my favourite meal. I'd serve it with a jacket potato and salad or rice and salad. It's easy, filling and always a winner."
As she continues her journey, Amber is keen to thank the people who have supported her every step of the way, saying "Thank you to everyone who has been part of my journey and supported me along the way. You've all been amazing. And a special thank you to Hayley, who keeps us all coming back every week."
Amber's story is a wonderful reminder that Slimming World isn't just about losing weight. It's about gaining confidence, improving health, creating lifelong habits and discovering that with support, determination and self-belief, anything is possible.
Hayley’s group runs at 5:30 on Thursday evenings in the Millennium House. Contact Hayley on 07966370233, or simply turn up on the night where a warm welcome awaits. To find details of other groups, or find out about careers with Slimming World, visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk.
