AWARDS and ceremonies come in all shapes and sizes. CHBN, Truro's Community and Hospital Radio Station, has nine awards on display at its studios in the Royal Cornwall Hospital, and has been doubly fortunate with nominations this month.
The Graham Steel Music Company named our weekly programme The Playlist its Radio Show of the Year. Volunteer presenters Jason Moyle and Adam Carpenter offer independent artists a platform to play their music and talk on air about their hopes and career plans. Listeners can phone in and vote for their favourites.
Station volunteers are bracing themselves for the Hospital Broadcasting Association (HBA) Award Ceremony in March. The HBA is the umbrella organisation which supports more than 140 UK hospital radio stations.
Entries are submitted in ten different categories at the end of the previous year. A shortlist is selected for each category, and the winners (gold, silver and bronze) will be announced at the HBA Conference. This year, CHBN has been shortlisted for four awards: Special Event, Moment of the Year, Station of the Year and Female Presenter.
At the end of 2024, CHBN was one of several hospital radio stations to participate in the Princess of Wales's Together at Christmas service in Westminster Abbey. Recorded in the Knowledge Spa, our special carol service was a good fit for the Best Special Event and Moment of the Year categories.
Our entry for Best Female Presenter is volunteer Clarissa Jacobs, whose Friday evening show aims to ease listeners into the weekend with a mixture of music and chat, ending with Clarissa's Lullaby. She also includes a comprehensive weather forecast given by her father, weather guru Jeff Jacobs.
Although we always reach the shortlist for Station of the Year, the top spot has eluded us; we live in hope. Watch this space.
CHBN is available 24/7 on 100.8 FM
