Bodmin is one of the oldest towns in Cornwall. It is the only large settlement in Cornwall recorded in the Domesday book. A monastery was built by St Petroc in the sixth century. Now there are more than 14,000 inhabitants according to the 2011 census. Before the county courts moved to Truro they used to be in Bodmin, making it the county town of Cornwall.
Bodmin was the centre of three uprisings. There were two in 1497: the Cornish Rebellion and the challenge to the throne of Henry VII by Perkin Warbeck. The third uprising was the Prayer Book Rebellion in 1549. There is a jail in Bodmin built in the 18th century. In the past more than 50 prisoners were hanged in Bodmin jail.
