CHARITY fundraising is a Forth Bridge activity, but savvy volunteers are always on the lookout for seasonal opportunities, writes Jean Main-Reade.

At CHBN, Truro's Community and Hospital Broadcasting Network, our online auction is a relatively new addition to our fundraising portfolio, but its initial success made it permanent.

A charity auction at Christmas links several aspects of the festive spirit. Local businesses and individuals donate items for sale, to add to contributions from CHBN members and supporters.

Our online catalogue features a wide range of tangible gifts such as vouchers and gift cards from the likes of Julian Foye, The County Arms, Geek Retreat and Helston Railway - welcome “not on the High Street” presents for “the person who has everything”.

There are collectable LPs and CDs, some from local producers, and books including Folio Society special editions. Electrical lots include a Yamaha HiFi System and a Behringer audio mixer.

Then there are ornaments and pictures, with contributions from local artists; jewellery items and clothing (Star Wars T-shirt, anyone?); and if you’re looking for something for winter evenings, there’s a weighted blanket or a luxury throw.

Let’s not forget family entertainment: bitesize Trivial Pursuit, table-top pool, a Tension Sport Edition game and, if the stress of the season is getting to you, Mr Angry's Swearing Punchball.

A modern gripe is that Christmas has become a commercial bonanza, losing sight of its true meaning. But a purchase from CHBN's online auction will combine a gift for a loved one (or even yourself!) with supporting the work of Truro's community and hospital radio station. Find our online catalogue at www.chbnradio.org/auction - there are more than 100 widely varying lots, and you might come across something you didn’t know you wanted.

CHBN is available on 100.8 FM, online, on the CHBN App and on your smart speaker.
