A RADIO station is, as it almost says on the tin, a producer of sound: words, music, even special effects. On occasion, however, it needs a printed extension to its output. Think of the Radio Times, first published in 1923, and one of the oldest magazines still in existence.
Nowadays, thousands of magazines are available online as well as in print, their purpose to inform, amuse, entertain, educate or influence – in short, to communicate.
CHBN, Truro’s Community and Hospital Broadcasting Network, provides a detailed website for its listeners at www.chbnradio.org. But our print magazine, SOUND, provides an extra dimension to the total content of the station.
Our new edition will shortly be available for patients in the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, the West Cornwall in Penzance and St Michael’s in Hayle. It will also be delivered to residents in and around Truro and copies can be found in public places such as the library and Tourist Information Centre.
SOUND gives a comprehensive overview of CHBN’s work in the hospitals and the community. Presenters talk about their programmes and reveal why they chose to volunteer. You might be inspired to do the same - details of how to apply are on page 15.
If full-on volunteering is not for you, you can still come on air to talk about, say, a charity or community group which is important to you, or even to perform your own music. Find out how on page 33 of SOUND.
The many ways of accessing CHBN, from locally to worldwide, are listed on page 9. And should you miss your favourite programme, there is a “Listen Again” facility on our website.
Are you a local business looking to raise awareness? You could advertise on air; our associate packages suit all needs and budgets. See page 34 of SOUND - look out locally for your copy.
