OUTSTANDING young people in the Newquay community have been commended for their positive contributions to the town.
Newquay Lions Club staged its sixth Young Citizens Awards ceremony at the Kilbirnie Hotel on Tuesday, May 20.
Mayor Drew Creek and Lion president Barbara May presented medals as well as certificates to 30 deserving young people aged between five and 16, which was attended by more than 100 parents, carers and friends.
Maggie Biddle, a friend of Newquay Lions, read out the testimonials.
The youngsters had been nominated by youth group leaders, teachers and charities.
Newquay Lions vice president Andy Hannan said: “This award recognises and celebrates young people who have exhibited characteristics we should nurture and encourage in our community.
“It was an inspiring evening recognising some outstanding young people within our community. It was a privilege to hear of their stories and contributions to the town.
“These young people, at this early stage in their life, are already exhibiting incredible caring, considerate, courageous and cooperative skills. This was not a competition, it was to acknowledge, encourage and celebrate these young people’s contribution to our community.”
Jill Willmot, the Newquay Lions youth officer and organiser, added: “The young people were a credit to their families and as a town we are lucky to have such wonderful young citizens that will be members of our adult community in the future.
“It was a great, uplifting, positive and inspirational occasion, reflecting the incredible quality of youngsters in our town.
“Newquay Lions would like to thank the Kilbirnie Hotel for their help in organising the event and teachers and youth leaders for taking time in their busty schedules to nominate the young citizens.”
Cllr Creek said: “I’m always inspired by the youth of the town who go above and beyond expectations.”
