CORNWALL is being warned to brace for winds of up to 70mph as the Met Office issues a yellow weather warning covering the South West.

The warning comes into force at midnight on Friday, October 23, and remains in place until midday, with strong winds expected to sweep across Cornwall.

Gusts of 50-60mph are possible inland, while exposed and coastal areas could see winds of 70mph or more.

The Met Office is also warning of periods of heavy rain, which could make already difficult travelling conditions worse.

Motorists are being urged to take extra care, with the strong winds raising the risk of fallen trees, branches and other debris on roads.

The weather could also cause disruption to rail, air and ferry services, while there is a risk of power cuts and damage to buildings.

Along Cornwall's coast, large waves could create additional hazards, particularly around sea fronts, harbours and exposed coastal roads.

The strongest winds are expected to ease from late Friday morning into the early afternoon, although the Met Office says there remains some uncertainty over exactly when and where the most severe conditions will hit.

People are being advised to secure loose items around their homes, including garden furniture and bins, before the winds arrive.

The Met Office also recommends checking travel conditions before setting off and preparing for possible power cuts by keeping torches, batteries and a charged mobile phone or power bank to hand.
