WORK is underway to create a new pedestrian crossing to make the entrance to Pentire safer.

Cornwall Council is constructing the crossing where Pentire Avenue, Pentire Crescent, Pentire Road and Pentire Avenue, Esplanade Road converge.

Residents as well as the Pentire Residents Association have called for improvements to be made to the busy junction following concerns the current layout is dangerous for pedestrians to cross and has caused uncertainty for motorists regarding who has the right of way.

The scheme includes the installation of a pedestrian refuge island, widening of the carriageway, construction of an official footway associated with the crossing point and the installation of a new bus shelter.

Delays are expected while the work is carried out.

A spokesperson for the resident association said: “Be prepared to be frustrated for a while with the four-way traffic lights at the junction when the work on this much needed safety measure isa built.

“Motorists should leave plenty of time for wherever they are going.”
