Veterans have visited a memorial on Bodmin Moor which commemorates servicemen who lost their lives during the Second World War.

Members of the Bodmin branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL), the Bodmin branch of the Armed Forces Veterans Breakfast Club and the Bodmin Veterans Walking Group trekked to the plaque at the summit of Rough Tor which remembers the men of the 43rd (Wessex) Division.

The Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry was part of the 43rd Wessex Division during the war.

Jess James from the Rifles Association gave a talk on the activities of the division, from landing in France through to the action on Hill 112 (Cornwall Hill). The walk was led by George Blackbourn in dry but windy conditions. Everyone who went along made it to the top in about an hour and 15 minutes.

An act of remembrance was observed at the memorial with a recording of the Last Post played. Veterans held a salute during the two-minute silence.

RBL branch chairman Derek Coad gave the Exhortation and the Kohima Epitaph.

Branch secretary Heidi Ricklesford made a biodegradable wreath which she laid on the memorial.

It is hoped to make the walk and act of remembrance an annual event.
