THE 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day was marked in St Austell with a commemoration at the town’s library.

A spokesperson for the town council said: “St Austell Library Support Association (SALSA) and the Royal British Legion hosted a VE Day commemoration event on Thursday, May 8.

“The short ceremony started with a prayer, the laying of wreaths by the Mayor of St Austell, the Royal British Legion and St Austell Library, and the names of the World War II fallen being read out by Colin Hamilton, president of the Royal British Legion. The ceremony culminated with the Last Post and a two-minute silence.

“SALSA provided refreshments afterwards, including spam sandwiches and a VE Day cake which attendees enjoyed whilst looking at wartime memorabilia.”
