REPORTS have been received that vandals damaged a popular play park in Newquay on Saturday night, which will cost hundreds of pounds to repair.

Fires were lit inside the tube slide and on the safety flooring at the Doorstep Green play park at Treloggan. Rubbish as well as food was also strewn around.

CCTV will now be monitored in a bid to catch the culprits.

A spokesperson for Treloggan Residents Association said: “It is so disheartening to see the park has been trashed with fires set inside the tube slide and on the tarmac safety flooring.

“Pepsi was spilled down the slide and there were cans and rubbish everywhere.

“We have wiped as much of the sticky stuff as we could and picked up the rubbish.

“The incident will be reported to Newquay Town Council and hopefully they will send someone to clear the fire damage.

“If you are a parent of teenagers please teach them respect.”

Mayor Drew Creek said: “It is really disappointing to see the play park has been vandalised. I will get onto our environment team.

“Our amazing CCTV team will review the footage and liaise with the police as they always do.”

Town councillor Nick Morris added: “It sickens me that money is going to have to be spent repairing the vandalism that could have been spent on other services.

“Senseless vandalism like this needs to stop as it wastes money repairing it.

“Thank you to the residents association for clearing the mess that was left.”
