CITY volunteers were rewarded for their efforts at the fourth Truro Civic Awards ceremony, hosted by Truro Civic Society on Friday night [March 27] at Truro Methodist Church.
Following a foot-tapping performance by the Shower to Stage Choir, 31 individuals and groups were presented with certificates of recognition.
In the junior category, Rex Aucott, 10, was rewarded for raising over £1,000 for the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust charity by cutting off his long hair, while brothers Rudi and Rafferty Jackson-Hicks climbed mountains in aid of mental health charity Man Down.
Group recipients included percussion workshop providers Drums 4Fun CIC, Fix and Flourish Group and Truro Volunteers for removing graffiti, volunteer teams at Truro Cathedral and Truro Cricket Club, fundraisers Truro Lions, the Sunshine Café community hub team, and Friends groups supporting Daubuz Moor, Sunny Corner and Archbishop Benson primary school.
Female nominees included Richard Lander deputy head Jenny Griffiths for leading fundraising efforts for Ugandan schools, and William IV landlady Ellie Pitt for running charity quizzes. They were joined by Truro Loops stalwart Sue Brown, St John Ambulance volunteer Nicola Ginns, Truro Cricket Club’s Tamsin Heayn, Sambells Café cook Kirsten Lean, crafter Julie Moore, postbox topper creator Joanne Wilkes and iSight Cornwall volunteer Jenny Salmon.
Among the gents, resplendent in traditional Filipino costume, Michael Joel Apas was celebrated for making the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust’s overseas employees feel welcome. Royal British Legion standard bearer Simon Cundy was called up, as were St Piran parade steward Richard Estlick, Sunny Corner volunteer Ian Gunn, Tim Johns OBE for his work with 730 (City of Truro) Air Training Cadets, iSight Cornwall volunteer Christopher Kemp, Truro Boxing Club coach Ian Tennant and St John Ambulance volunteer Chris Waters.
Awards were presented by society chairman Malcolm Bell and mayor Cllr Chris Wells, who said: “Without these people, Truro would be so much poorer.”
