TRURO Farmers Market has been awarded £25,000 through Airbnb’s Best of British fund, recognising its important role in championing local food, community connection and authentic Cornish experiences.
The twice-weekly market is a vibrant part of the city centre, bringing together producers, artisans and visitors in a welcoming and sociable setting on Lemon Quay from 9am to 4pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The funding will support the development of a more immersive and engaging experience, celebrating the stories behind the produce, the people who create it and the unique character of Truro. The initiative is expected to increase visitor footfall, not only for market traders but also for independent cafés and retailers.
Truro Farmers Market chairman Scott Hall said: “This is a huge moment for the market and for all the traders who make it what it is. We’ve always been proud of the quality, passion and community behind it, and this funding gives us the opportunity to build on that in a really exciting way.
“It allows us to create something that not only supports our producers but also gives visitors a deeper connection to Cornwall’s food and the people behind it. We’re looking forward to seeing how this develops over the coming months.”
AirBnB’s £1 million Best of British fund was launched to support communities and businesses in transforming local traditions to boost UK tourism.
Visit Truro manager Abi Steel said: “We’re seeing two really strong trends in visitor behaviour at the moment: people are actively looking for authentic, memorable experiences, and there’s a growing appetite for high-quality local food and drink.
“This funding is a fantastic opportunity to bring those two things together, creating something genuinely special for Truro that not only enhances the farmers’ market, but also encourages more people to spend time in the city and explore everything our high street has to offer.”
