TRAFFIC disruption in Newquay is to remain until a main road is scheduled to reopen on Sunday.

South West Water has completed work to repair a leak on Gannel Road and is now “reinstating the road.”

The works to repair the leak has caused traffic congestion on surrounding roads including Mount Wise, Trenance Road and Edgcumbe Avenue.

South West Water declared a pollution incident for the River Gannel as it made a “short” release of “fully treated UV-disinfected high-quality effluent” as part of the works following an agreement with the Environment Agency.

A spokesperson for South West Water said: “We have completed planned work to repair a leak on Gannel Road in Newquay.

“This has been a complex and difficult repair and as a result Gannel Road will remain closed until Sunday, 19th October while we reinstate the road.

“The temporary overland pipes that were installed as part of these works have now been removed. We apologise to residents for the inconvenience this may cause.”

The Environment Agency stated South West Water repaired the leaking pipe within their Newquay sewerage system.

The pipe is used to transfer fully treated sewage from the Sewage Treatment Works (STW) to the permitted discharge to the sea.

South West Water has been monitoring and undertaking temporary works to minimise risks to the environment by using tankers to remove a large proportion of the final treated effluent.

The Environment Agency put out information on bathing water quality at Crantock Beach on Swimfo so people could make an informed choice about using the bathing water whilst the sewage effluent is fully treated, including disinfection using UV treatment.

South West Water had equipment in place to monitor and address any impacts on the environment.
