A TEENAGER has been sentenced to 14 months in prison after a supermarket car park attack that left his victim with long-standing eye damage.

Oakley Daniell, 19, from Wilkinson Gardens, Redruth, appeared at Truro Crown Court for sentence on Friday, October 10, after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm.

The court heard how Daniell and the victim in the case were known to each other.

On Saturday, July 27 last year, the victim attended Sainsbury’s in Falmouth with his nan at around 8.20pm.

As the victim exited the store and walked towards his nan’s car, Daniell followed him and after a brief verbal exchange, punched him in the face forcing him backwards.

Daniell then punched the victim again, knocking him towards the floor, before kicking him and kneeing him. Daniell then followed up with further blows as the victim attempted to defend himself on the ground.

Daniell then walked away, leaving the victim on the floor.

The victim was taken to Royal Cornwall Hospital and has since undergone numerous operations to his eye. Nearly after a year after the incident, he continued to suffer from the effects of the assault.

Officer in the case, DC Richard Haycock said: “This was an extremely violent attack, carried out in a public place which resulted in the victim suffering significant injury for which he has undergone numerous operations.

“Oakley Daniell continued to land blows as the victim lay defenceless and it is only through luck that his injuries were not even more serious.

“I welcome the sentence passed by the court and hope it demonstrates that violence will not be tolerated in our community.”
