The life of a newspaper owner who left a lasting legacy in Cornwall is the focus of a forthcoming talk being held.

Duncan Paul Matthews will be speaking on John Passmore Edwards at Bodmin Old Cornwall Society’s next meeting in the Shire Hall Suite, Priory Park, Bodmin on Wednesday, February 8 at 2.30 pm.

Born in Blackwater the lifelong champion of the working classes, Passmore Edwards is remembered as a generous benefactor.

Over the space of 14 years, 70 major buildings were established as a direct result of his bequests including public library buildings in Bodmin, Camborne, Falmouth, Launceston, Liskeard, Penzance, Redruth, St Ives and Truro.

He also briefly served as a Member of Parliament.
