A SURFER has created a free web app for people to check wave conditions in Newquay after becoming frustrated forecasts were regularly wrong.

Matt Grey, who has lived in Newquay for two years, has published NQY NOW, which features 10 beaches from Crantock to Mawgan Porth.

The app includes information on live swell, wind and tide as well as things people in the town tend to look up before heading out to hit the surf such as rain hour by hour and the sunset timings. It also features pollution warnings, rip currents and the nearest defibrillator for each beach, lives buses and a Cribbar watch.

Matt said: “I got fed up checking five websites before a surf, so I built one page that answers it all. Made in Newquay, for Newquay.

“The app gives a green, yellow or red call for 10 beaches, from Crantock to Mawgan Porth. That call is worked out from the live swell, wind and tide.

“A map of the coast shows them side by side with a wave height against each one, and names the best beach at that moment.

“If you’re in Porth heading to Watergate Bay, it shows the next bus there and the last one home, so you don’t get stranded. It also features what’s on tonight, what’s open now, and a Cribbar watch for the rare days the big wave off Towan Head could be breaking.

“I built the app because it needed to be done. It started out as I was fed up looking at forecasts that were wrong. Then I started adding things that I thought would be useful.

“NQY NOW is free, with no adverts, cookies or sign-up, and works on any phone. I’d love to hear what locals think is missing. There’s a contact link in the app for people to send any suggestions.”
