A 95-year-old celebrated her birthday with snowdrops – continuing a lifelong tradition.

Snowdrops were out when Jean Ashton was born so, every year, her father gave her mother a bunch of the delicate flowers.

The tradition later evolved with Jean receiving snowdrops from her daughter. Now Jean, from Lostwithiel, receives snowdrops from her grand-daughter.

Jean was accompanied by her grand-daughter when she went along to the Snowdrop Weekend at Pencarrow House and Gardens at Washaway between Bodmin and Wadebridge.

Members of the Friends of Pencarrow, who organised the event, presented Jean with a basket of snowdrops to celebrate her birthday and her love of the flowers.

Two charities, Bodmin Hospital League of Friends and Concern Wadebridge, benefited from the weekend.

The gardens at Pencarrow will reopen on March 1 with the house opening from  March 25. Further details can be found on the Pencarrow website: pencarrow.co.uk
