The Cornwall-based international disaster relief charity, ShelterBox, is giving members of the public a chance to learn more about its work around the world.
It’s opening the doors of its Truro headquarters on the evening of Wednesday, May 24, inviting people to discover for themselves how it provides emergency shelter to people affected by conflict and disaster.
Community fundraising manager for ShelterBox, Lucy Holden said: “This is a chance for people to explore what ShelterBox is about, meet our team, and find out about what we’re doing across the world and how it’s making a tangible difference.
“As well as getting hands on with our aid items, those who come along will have an opportunity to hear from our response team members and learn more about how we’re helping people affected by the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.”
The charity specialises in emergency shelter aid and often provides life-changing items like water filters, mosquito nets, and solar lights to people left with very little.
Attendees will hear from ShelterBox programme manager Jack Bailey who has overseen the charity’s long-standing work supporting people displaced by the conflict in Syria and its ongoing earthquake response.
Many people already displaced by the conflict were made homeless again by the recent earthquakes that flattened whole towns during a cold winter.
Since it was established by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in 2000, ShelterBox has supported 2.5 million people across 98 countries.
Known for its iconic green boxes, the charity has been continuously evolving to better meet the needs of displaced people.
ShelterBox no longer provides aid only in boxes, instead providing combinations of aid that are locally appropriate and packaged in a variety of ways to make a tangible difference.
ShelterBox is currently helping people affected by extreme weather events like the monsoon flooding in Pakistan and the worst drought to hit East Africa in 40 years.
It is also supporting people who have had to flee their homes, or had them damaged, because of conflict in Ukraine, Yemen, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, and Mozambique.
All are welcome to attend the free Beyond the Box Live event, being hosted between 6pm and 7.30pm at ShelterBox HQ, Truro TR1 2PH. Anyone wanting to attend should sign up via https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/beyond-the-box-live-in-truro-tickets-591582758957
