Pupils from Mevagissey School have taken part in a joint initiative with Cornwall Council and the Lost Gardens of Heligan to plant trees for the community.

The pupils visited the gardens in May and planted 30 Jubilee trees under supervision from Heligan staff and teachers.

Event organiser and local Cornwall Councillor James Mustoe said: “I have vivid memories during my time at Mevagissey School of going up to Heligan and planting trees, which I can still visit today. So I contacted Heligan about seeing if they could do something similar today.

“The team put something together lightning quick, and it was great to go up with the current Year 6s and see them enjoying themselves in the sunshine after SATS. They did a brilliant job of planting the trees, ably assisted by Mark and the Heligan team. It was a great piece of community work.”

Mevagissey School teacher Aimee Kelly said: “It was lovely to see the children so eager to help and be a part of their community. It would be great for them to revisit their trees and see how they grow over the next couple of years.”

Year 6 pupil Beth said: “I enjoyed planting the trees and we got to see all of the roots of them.”

Her classmate Isla enjoyed digging holes for the trees to go in, while Charlie added: “I like the fact the trees are going to be next to the bug house.”
