NEWQUAY RNLI volunteers did not have to wait long to take the station lifeboat out on its first shout.

The D Class lifeboat D-907 ‘Richmond’ was tasked to assist Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue Team on Thursday, October 9 at 4.12am – two days after arriving at the lifeboat station.

Newquay RNLI volunteers were paged and both of the charity's inshore lifeboats were crewed and prepared for launch.

Falmouth Coastguard tasked the crews to remain on immediate readiness but were stood down at 5.40am without the need for launch. A second tasking of the day came with a request to launch to a person cut off by the tide at Towan Beach shortly before 5pm.

The D-907, "Richmond" was launched on her maiden service under the command of helm, Joe Emmett, with Ashley Mann and Olly Jones as crew.

Richmond arrived on scene shortly after 5pm, where the crew located a 19-year-old man on an isolated rock between Towan and Great Western beaches totally surrounded by the sea, soaking wet and extremely cold from waves of approximately half a metre breaking on the rock.

Mr Mann, a qualified paramedic, was put onto the rock to reassure the casualty and to put a lifejacket on him. Once Mr Mann had confirmed all was OK, Mr Emmett, steadied the lifeboat close to the rock. Mr Jones assisted Mr Mann and the teenager onboard.

The casualty and boat crew returned to the harbour at 5.10pm where the teenager was dried, warmed and checked over for any injuries.

The D Class lifeboat D-907 ‘Richmond’ underwent sea trails after arriving at the lifeboat station on Tuesday, October 7.

She was placed on active service after the successful sea trails and acceptance by helm and mechanic Mike Martin.
