Truro Hospital Radio volunteers have broadcast from their studios at the Royal Cornwall Hospital for the first time in three years.

Presenters Mark Sanders and Mike Brown took to the airwaves at 10.08am on Sunday, July 2, 43 years to the date when Truro Hospital Radio was registered with the Charity Commission in 1980, making it the first local radio station in Cornwall.

The time was chosen to reflect the fact that in 2013, Ofcom granted the station a licence to broadcast on 100.8 FM to Truro and the surrounding area, creating Truro’s Community and Hospital Broadcasting Network (CHBN) - a Community Interest Company (CIC) to partner the registered charity.

It is now possible for “outside” presenters from the hospital and the community to have more input in the station’s programming. These include audiovisual communications specialist Peter Young, who is planning an RCHT show with fellow presenter Abbey Kellow, covering all matters related to health and wellbeing, and more.

Spokesperson Jean Main-Read said: “Anniversaries with a nought at the end are important, but sadly, the 40th anniversary of the Hospital Radio in 2020 had to pass without fanfare. However, greater celebrations for the new studio, and the 40 + 3 date will happen later in the summer.”

CHBN Radio is available 24/7 on 100.8 FM, on the free NHS Wi-Fi network in hospital and online at www.chbnradio.org
