SCHOOLCHILDREN have created a new piece of community artwork to greet passengers arriving at Newquay Railway Station.
Newquay Junior Academy pupils made the eye-catching design using a mix of paints, collage and illustration.
The railway station artwork was created during workshop sessions led by Newquay based artist Alissa Kindred ahead of the new Mid Cornwall Metro services getting underway.
The project was commissioned by the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership and funded through CrossCountry Trains’ Community Engagement Fund.
The Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership works to promote branch lines in two counties and is a non-profit partnership between local authorities, the rail industry and the University of Plymouth, where it is based. Leading partners include Cornwall Council, Devon County Council and Great Western Railway.
Rebecca Catterall from the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership, said: “The artwork the children have created has further enhanced the station environment and I hope it will delight passengers who pass through the station with its wonderfully vibrant depiction of Newquay.”
Artist Alissa Kindred said: “It was a real pleasure and privilege to work with Newquay Junior Academy kids to create this artwork.
“From start to finish they showed great creativity and made something that truly belongs to them and captures Newquay.”
Lisa Mann, deputy head teacher at Newquay Junior Academy said: “We are incredibly grateful to have been involved in this project, and our pupils are so proud to see their work come to life on the station.”
Lee Goodson, Great Western Railway station manager for Newquay, said: “We’re thrilled to have this vibrant, eye-catching artwork take pride of place in Newquay station for our customers and colleagues to enjoy.
“It’s a welcome addition to the station just in time for the Mid Cornwall Metro services to start, which will nearly double the services between Par and Newquay and bring more visitors to the area.”
