CORNISH pubs have received recognition for their quality of real ale.
The Pheasant in St Newlyn East, The Cornishman in Crantock, The Front in Falmouth, The Ship Inn in Lerryn, The Mariners in Rock and The Golden Lion in Padstow have joined Rock-based Sharp’s Brewing Co’s new Cask Quality Club for their commitment to serving British cask ale at its very best.

The brewery is shining a light on the local ‘cask champions’ during national Cask Ale Week between September 18 and 28, which celebrates cask-conditioned beer.
James Wilson, the general manager of The Pheasant said, "Here at The Pheasant, serving exceptional cask ale is at the heart of everything we do. Cask is the only product that we as publicans can offer to our guests, that they almost certainly can't get at home. True cask conditioned beer is an artform and a tradition closely associated with the great British pub. It is nice to be lauded for the effort we put in week in and week out, to know that the pint we put in front of people is a great representation of not only the cask ale industry and what it has to offer, but of the attention to detail that we put forward here at The Pheasant.”
Dave Ruddick of The Cornishman added: "We’re really proud to be part of Sharp’s Cask Quality Club. At The Cornishman, we’ve always been passionate about serving cask ale at its very best, and this recognition reflects the hard work our team puts into keeping our beer in perfect condition. It’s fantastic to be part of a community of pubs that share the same commitment to quality, and we’re excited to celebrate everything that makes cask ale such an important part of pub life here in Cornwall.”
Sharp’s Brewing Co marketing controller, Nigel Maguire said: “We are beyond committed to this category, and Cask Ale Week provides an extra opportunity to highlight the extra qualities and care and attention that goes into not only brewing, but also treating and serving, the perfect pint of cask ale.
“The launch of our Cask Quality Club typifies our Sharp’s mission to champion the amazing qualities of cask beer across the UK and in our heartlands of Cornwall all year round. You’d be surprised how many people don’t know that cask beer and ale is a distinctively British technique, or that cask ale is essentially a live product.
“We’re continually looking for ways to reinvigorate the cask market by celebrating venues that maintain the highest standards in serving the perfect pint. The Pheasant exemplifies what it means to be a true Cornish cask champion. It is an incredible venue where beer quality, exceptional food and community spirit converge seamlessly and we’re so very pleased to have them in the club.”
From its humble beginnings in Rock in 1994 to becoming the largest brewer of cask beer in the South West, Sharp’s Brewing Co has always been synonymous with quality and innovation. Its flagship beer, Doom Bar, remains a favourite across the UK, while its portfolio boasts over 200 local, national and international brewing awards. The brewery will also be launching a unique limited-edition brew for Cask Ale Week 2025 (18th – 28th September 2025), further details to follow.
The launch of Sharp’s Brewing Co’s Cask Quality Club comes as the brewery recently unveiled a refreshed look for its cask and keg range designed to engage a new generation of beer drinkers. The youthful cask rebrand covers the flagship Doom Bar amber ale, Twin Coast session pale ale and Sea Fury special ale and includes a range of newly designed glassware and packaging. In keg, Offshore Pilsner and Atlantic Pale Ale have been rebranded. The youthful new brand design has been inspired by the natural surroundings of the brewery’s home and contemporary Cornish coastal identity.
