Cornwall Council has committed to repairing a busy stretch of St Austell road after the scale of the problems there were highlighted by local councillors.
Richard Pears, Cornwall councillor for Poltair and Mount Charles, and James Mustoe, Cornwall councillor for Mevagissey, recently flagged concerns with the stretch of Porthpean Road that runs from the Cromwell Road junction to the Duporth crossroads with Cormac.
In response Cormac has confirmed the stretch of road will be resurfaced under a night-time closure order from March 20, as part of a package of surfacing works that also includes Cromwell Road.
Cllr Pears said: “We are delighted to see Cormac act quickly in confirming they will be resurfacing this stretch of road in a matter of months, and am pleased they recognised how serious the issues on this part of the highway have got.
“We look forward to seeing the road resurfaced, with minimal disruption, in March.”
Cllr Mustoe said: “It is good to see Cormac taking the concerns we raised on behalf of local people seriously and taking immediate action in confirming the resurfacing of the road.
“On top of this, I was pleased to hear they are in ongoing dialogue with Wainhomes about sorting the drainage problems that lead to this road being regularly flooded, and I have now written to this developer as well to add my weight to calls to get this sorted.
“It seemed the seriousness of this issue meant it actually got national recognition, as we were highlighted on the prestigious ‘Angry People in Local Newspapers’ website, in particular for my apparent skills in pointing the matter out to the authorities.
“All joking aside though, it is good that we were able to raise awareness of this problem and get confirmation of a solution in a timely manner from Cormac.
“Thank you to everyone who took the time to raise this with us, and we will continue to be vigilant for highways issues throughout our divisions.”
