YEAR 9 students from Pool Academy have had the opportunity to bring their history lessons to life with an immersive trip to Bodmin Jail and Restormel Castle.
As part of their current topic, ‘Prisons and Policing’, the students have been exploring how the British prison system has evolved, from the harsh conditions of early gaols to the structured regime of modern institutions like Pentonville.
The visit to Bodmin Jail provided a fascinating glimpse into Cornwall’s criminal past, highlighting crimes such as highway robbery and arson.

Students experienced firsthand the difficult conditions inmates faced, learning about punishments, prison labour such as oakum picking and treadmill walking, and even had a go at turning the infamous crank.
In the afternoon, students travelled to Restormel Castle, a striking example of a medieval Motte and Bailey fortress. There, they explored the historic ruins, walked along the moat, climbed the ramparts, and discovered what life would have been like within the castle walls centuries ago.
Both locations gave students a hands-on and engaging experience, deepening their understanding of the historical topics they have been studying and sparking curiosity about the past.

Principal Nick Ward said: “This trip was a fantastic opportunity for our students to engage with history beyond the classroom. Exploring Bodmin Jail and Restormel Castle helped them connect what they’ve been learning with real-life locations and experiences.
“At Pool Academy, we want every student to be inspired by the past, and this kind of hands-on learning is a powerful way to deepen understanding and build confidence.”
